Spring holiday

We get Friday off; awesome! I'm glad for this break (everyone needs it), but there is a catch. This is the last break we are getting before summer vacation. Which bites.

I would have liked to have this a little farther from spring break, but it can't be done. The "spring holiday" that we are getting off Friday for is to be referred to as such, though it really is for Good Friday, a religious holiday. So we can't change the break day. Which is terrible.

But right now, I'm not complaining.

Can't Wait...

I'm thinking that in about 65
days, we're officially out on
SUMMER VACATION! Yay :)
I'm not sure what I'm going to be
doing that whole time, but i know
for a fact that I'm going to have
to get a job...
Ugh. Just kidding!
I'm actually looking forward to
working because that would only
be my second time being employed,
and that's always sort of: Interesting.
I was looking forward to the parties,
and all of the other things
that come with the summer...
Oh well.
I know I'm older now and
that this is the way it's going to be
from now on.
We can't magically go back
in time to when we were younger;
Back to all of our water balloon fights and
having sleepovers that only lasted till 11 p.m.
We have to take responsibility and
change our routines a little..
I'm okay with it though because
I know that it's required in everyone's lives.

Down to business

First off, I hope you all had a very nice, restful, super-awesome break. Now that it's over, we need to get to work on the newspaper. Of course, I hope you all put aside some time to work on your articles this past week. But if you didn't, and you still have articles that need to be completed, you better kick it into high gear. Thanks to those of you who have finished and turned in your stories; it is greatly appreciated. If you have questions about any of your articles, feel free to ask Shayna or Hannah. We need to get this paper on the press, and we can only do that if everyone gets down to business. I've already written two of my three assigned stories. How far along are you guys?

Spring Break!

On Thursday night right after the Flogging Molly concert Paige and I are off to San Francisco! It's going to be a long drive but completely worth it. I'm getting my liscence switched today so Paige can drive with me in the car (because I'm over 18 now, finally!). It's going to be pretty amazing. We're going to look at colleges and just wander the city. Paige's aunt said we could stay with her so we don't even have to pay for a hotel room. I hope your guys' Spring Break is equally or even more amazing! Have fun :)

Special guest speaker on Thursday

Hi, staff. I will not be in today. Do what you do best. Please see Lucy, Shayna or Emily if you are not sure what is still needed for our next issue.

On Thursday, Patty Talahongva will be here as a special guest speaker. Get your questions and cameras ready.

Patty is a journalist and news program host, of the Hopi nation. She is president of the Native American Journalists Association, and the first Native American to host a national news program, Village America. Patty has produced TV newscasts, documentaries, and special projects for television. She also writes for several national newspapers and magazines, and contributes to the national radio talk show, Native America Calling.

I think you will be enlightened and impressed. If you can, please try to come during advisory at 10 a.m. Thank you.

Also, since Patty is recognized nationally for her work, an article about her visit for our online newspaper would certainly be appropriate.

Aint no rest for the wicked

So I have Transient Insomnia and for a while there I had no issue sleeping, but lately I cannot close my eyes. I hate it. Having insomnia is like being stuck between reality and a dream. You're conscious but you can't decipher if that really happened or if it was a dream. The longest period of time I have ever gone without sleep, lasting more than an hour at a time, was sixteen days. My eyes blur and I can't find the right words. If it gets really bad, I can start having auditory and slight visual hallucinations. But as of right now it isn't that bad, not even close. I don't know why I can't sleep, and it's just infuriating.

It's like night after night I just lay there and stare at my wall waiting to drift off but my mind won't turn off. "I have so much to do. This is a waste of time. Get up. I have no time for this nonsense. Wake up!" I just keep reminding myself of all the things that I have to do. Get a car, find a job, help out my ma, pay to get the gas turned back on. Jesus...

I've tried everything. Create a bedtime routine, make your room totally dark, make it completely quiet, and I refuse to take addicting sleeping pills, nothing ever works. So all I can do is wait for this to pass, like it always does, and until then just deal. Drink a lot of caffeine and try to wear myself out eventually. From one exhausted human to another. Goodnight.

"There ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
I've got bills to pay, I've got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free,
Oh no I can't slow down, I can't hold back,
Though you know I wish I could,
No, there ain't rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good."

Drama!!!

We have all had our fair share of it, but gosh, is it draining! I think that avoiding drama is the hardest thing for a girl to do.... That's why I think it would be a good idea for someone way more mature than I to write something on avoiding drama. It would be cool, I think.

What's next?

Well, it looks like we still have quite a bit of work to do on our newspaper. Here's some ideas that we really need people to step up on and "get the story."

  1. Sports: Thursday we have a huge track meet. We need pictures and interviews.
    1. Golf: varsity plays at home on Thursday. I'll take pictures.
    2. Softball: 24 teams will be here Friday and Saturday. We need pictures and stories.
    3. Baseball: next week
  2. Spirit week: yes, I know, again!!
    1. There must be about 100 pictures in the folder from the assembly on Wednesday.
  3. Scavenger Hunt: good job, girls. There are lots of photos in the January folder. Let's put them to good use with a theme. I thought the front page idea was good.
  4. Samantha Newton: she's our 18-year-old senior with leukemia. I spoke to her and her mother yesterday. They are very willing to tell Samantha's story. I think this would be a marvelous human interest story. Both Samantha and her mom, Dara Newton, would prefer that whoever does the story email them with the questions. Then call her later if you have questions. Her email is daranewt@msn.com. This is a very delicate story. Samantha was in the hospital (on her back) for three months. She plans on attending the prom with her boyfriend Noe Vargas, and she hopes to walk with her class for graduation. The family has been through so much, and they still have a long way to go. Her mother said that Samantha will need treatments (radiation and chemo) for the next two years. If someone would like to do this (it takes courage), I have more information for you. Thanks.
  5. April Fool's Day: we must print some totally fabricated stories for this day. Believe me, no matter how outrageous it is, some kids will believe it.
    1. indoor windsurfing champ
    2. student drafted by the NFL
    3. i-pods to replace many teachers
    4. rabid javelina attack student's car
    5. McDowell and Booth get in fist fight over where to eat lunch
    6. you get the idea.
  6. We need band pictures
    1. Mrs. Cleveland said first period is best for pictures.
  7. Other suggestions are welcomed.
  8. Writer's club Friday morning. Donuts!!
Thank you,
