Last Day!!

Today is the last day of journalism class. I can't wait until the summer. This summer I'm going to be celebrating my 17th birthday on june 8. I can't wait. Then later in the summer I'm going to a concert with my two sisters. This summer is going to be fun but I'm going to miss my friends. I'll hope to see all of my friends next year.

When the music's over...

Today is my last real school day here at WHS. I find it unbelievable that this trip is truly over. I had a plan for this, as most people do, but of course it fell through. I'm continuing my education at EMCC my first two years and work on a journalism degree. If that doesn't work then I'm going to take a class in Special Effects Makeup, which is the one thing I really want to do with my life. It's just hard to make money with it. That's honestly what my life has been reduced to. College in Arizona, majoring in something I'm not sure I want to do anymore, dead tired, and working my butt off to be average.

They tell you these are the best days of your life. These are the times you'll always look back on and miss. Sure, there are somethings about this place that I'll miss, plenty on things actually, but if this is as good as it gets... why do people even try to go on?

I have never been under more stress in my entire life. My insomnia is back because of all the things I've been going through. My best friend has my back against the wall, telling me if I don't move with her then I must not love her. My heart has been broken, but this time by a guy so sweet I can't even hate him even though I want to with every fiber of my being. Papers are due and so are the bills. I have to find my own place by the end of the summer and without my best friend living with me, I have no idea how I'm going to afford it... For the first time in a long time I am feeling the ground beneath my feet begging to crumble. I am feeling myself break.

The only thing I can count on is graduation. Maybe hitting that milestone will somehow slow down my life. If only for a second so I can breathe or a night so I can finally sleep. So, Mr. Burd, that is my final. That is what I'm doing with my life. Panicking, not sleeping, barely eating, and trying to figure out where to go and what to do. I suppose I'm just doing what any stressed out senior is doing, but for the first time in my life I have realized, from now on life is not going to be easy. It's all up hill from here. And that scares the hell out of me. So there you go. Take it or leave it. Give me an A or an F, either way I did what you said. I wrote you something.

Apparently...

My account hasn't necessarily been cut off and yeah even though I may not be in Journalism anymore (or even in the district anymore), I hope it doesn't strike bad things for at least saying hi and being updated from you guys. Wow, WHS . . . feels like a long time ago I was there. I miss it there. I miss the people, the teachers, the classmates, the views (those were highlights of my days!), and, can you believe it, the work?
Everything is so different from where I'm at now.
I mean, the school is like a LOT BIGGER and the way the teachers are is just strange. Don't get me wrong, everyone is great there! It's just not the same.
Anyway, if any of you guys are reading this, I wish for two favors:
  1. Keep me updated on anything interesting. You guys probably still have my Gmail account. If not, here it is: dmalleo.07@gmail.com
  2. Tell the following people I said hi:
  • Alex Camacho
  • Mr. Burd
  • Ashlyn Hopper
  • Emily Prevost
  • Lucy Randazzo
  • Shayna Innocenti Nathaniel Evans
  • Kelci Lopez
  • Amber Melot
  • Chessnie Cline
  • Josie Guazzo
  • John Allen-Winchester (Don't know him? Talk to Ashlyn.)
  • Amanda Aliser
And that's all for now you guys. GO WRANGLERS! Miss you!

the end.

So i was looking over the senior schedule for the rest of the year and it was a little weird. Wednesday is my last day of school and after that my school year will be filled only with graduation practices. It's a little sad that I'm not coming back to this school... Even if my whole reason for graduating early was to get away. I don't regret graduating early but I feel like my high school career was very short (which it was). Time went by so fast and by now it's only getting faster. I hope graduation is awesome. I hope I don't trip and fall as I'm walking up the steps to get my diploma, and I hope it doesn't rain so we can still have the ceremony outside. For the seniors: I hope that we all accomplish everything that what we dream of in life. Go class of 2010 :)

Capital Punishment

I'm doing a paper for government on the death penalty and I was just wondering: what is your opinion on capital punishment? I personally think it is hypocritical and wrong. I believe strongly in "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." I don't think anyone has the right to murder, whether it be a single person or a government institution.

Give me your opinions. I'd like another insight to put into my paper to give it contrast. Thank you!

Writer's block

Usually I have no issue coming up with a story and getting it down in type within a few days (sometimes even less), but lately I cannot get my words to flow right. My story about Justin Bergman is in the works and it's pretty good so far. The Annie, Jr. story is a toughie, but it's coming along slowly but surely.

I just really hope I can pull it together before this week is over. I never have writer's block, so this is a very strange occurrence to me. Don't worry editors; they'll be done and they'll be good, but they'll be pretty last-minute.

Don't rush me, I have a strict time schedule to work with. Studying for my government final and doing extra-credit is running my life. It's terrible. But like I said before, I always do what I need to do. (Even though last time I spent weeks writing really good stories only one of the four I wrote was published; which is frustrating, to say the least.) I'll have everything in by the end of this week. No worries.

More politics

Hmm agree or disagree? Very interesting.

(From an e-mail forwarded to me):

Everyone concentrates on the problems we're having in this country lately: illegal immigration, hurricane recovery, alligators attacking people in Florida...

Not me. I concentrate on solutions for the problems. It's a win-win situation.
  • Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border

  • Send the dirt to New Orleans to raise the level of the levies

  • Put the Florida alligators in the moat along the Mexican border

Any other problems you would like me to solve for today? Think about these:

  • Cows

  • The Constitution

  • The Ten Commandments

Cows:

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

The Constitution:

They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq... Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using anymore.

The Ten Commandments:

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot put "Thou shalt not steal", "Thou shalt not commit adultery" and "Thou shalt not lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.

What are your thoughts on all of this?

budget cuts cut rolemodels, and defies wrangler excellence

Budget cuts are seriously killing our school. It makes me super angry that our school can just cut teachers. When I spoke with Mr. Burd last week about not renewing his contract, the mannerism in which they went about telling him completely repulsed me. What happened to Wrangler excellence? When someone does a favor for you, you wouldn't normally chastise them for it, correct? Well apparently with our school that's incorrect. It is seriously wrong that the school has to cut teachers and I understand that it's not their (the school board's) fault, but seriously. Well I guess the whole point of this angry post was to say: Cutting teachers is like cutting student potential.

Checking in

Greetings, marvelous staff. I'll be off again on Thursday. Cathy broke her wrist and I have to take her to  the doctor's. She'll need a cast; we're hoping she won't need surgery.

If someone could slip out of class between 1:00 and 2:30, it would be great to get some pictures of Annie. There's a matinee in the Webb center for the kids at VP or Hassayampa.

If nobody can make it, perhaps someone is going to the show Thursday night. Take a camera.

Did anyone see the article in the Sun about a WHS girl who had her iPod stolen at school? The story was in the Police Report. The school's response was that "the school has a rule that students are not to bring iPods to school." Wow. That's a compassionate posture. I guess we can be thankful the girl didn't get a referral for breaking the rules.

Thank you all,

A place to fall apart...

All this talk about suicide is really hard. I have had two of my great friends kill themselves within the same month. It something that sticks with you and it's something you will never forget. I went back through every conversation I had ever had with them and thought about everything. Their favorite songs, colors, what they wore, their tattoos. I remembered the good times but mainly, after they did what they did, all I can remember is the bad. I close my eyes and instead of seeing good ol' goofy Bobby smiling and laughing, I just see him lying there. Instead of Charlie all tatted up and crazy eyed like he always was, giving me a hard time for being the only girl chilling with the boys, I picture him under a white sheet.

The hardest part of everything is knowing I could have helped one of them. Charlie was at my house the weekend before he did it. He asked if he could stay and I told him he could for as long as he wanted. He came up to me and my mom and said "I need to get out of my house. I'm going insane." I could tell he was sad but just figured he was having problems with his girlfriend... God I was wrong. The worst part, the gun he used to kill himself with, he tried selling to my step dad. And he was going to buy it but said, "Nah I don't know what I'd do with it." And when Charlie told him just to take it anyway, he said no. I don't mean to but I'll always hate him for not taking that gun away from him...

Everything around you shatters when someone takes their own life. It seems wrong and unnatural. None of us make it out of this world alive. We all have expiration dates, but we usually don't control them. In a way I understand it. At least from Charlie. He was always the type to play by his rules. He ran everything in his life and nothing could stop him. I see how he would choose to do the same thing with his death. People see suicide as a cowards way out, but never in a million years will I ever call them cowards. They looked at their life and didn't like what they saw. They didn't see how it could get better. I'm not condoning suicide in any way, all I'm saying is I love these men and I will never look down on them because of the way they died. People judge people who have committed suicide. They call them weak and selfish, but it take courage to look down the barrel of your own gun and it takes courage to hold a handful of pills in your hand and KNOW without a shadow of a doubt that this is the end. It's not what's right and it's not what's accepted but I will never judge them.

I may cry and I may fall apart into a million little pieces, I may look through pictures and listen to old songs that remind me of you, I may lay in bed some days and not want to get up, I may look at your house every time I pass it and, just for a moment, see you sitting on the couch with your daughter on your lap. I may forget you. I may forgive you, but I can tell you both right now, I'll always see you as what you each are. Intense, crazy, funny, sometimes dumb, sweet, loving, beautiful, tough men.

Rest in peace Bobby Sanders & Charlie White.

...

Yesterday Mr. Burd showed us the story on the girl from Queen Creek who committed suicide.
I couldn't help but think about how bad the girl's problems could have been that lead her to this.
Even though we all know this is a very touchy subject.. I can't help but have some thoughts on it.
My question is: how do the people who are closest to you NOT notice that something is wrong?
I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, but why do the victims have to actually "state" what their plans are before anyone sees something is going on?
I think we all need to pay attention to our friends and loved ones because we never know the effect that one small conversation or action could have.
I had a cousin who also decided to end his own life and his death always seemed sort of unnecessary.
I felt like someone should have paid more attention and helped him out before he chose to go this way.
In the article, the girl's dad said that once someone decided to commit suicide, they will find their way to do it...
I don't know if I have the same opinion on this.
Maybe if the person considering it has someone to talk to and guide them towards an alternative, their minds COULD be changed..
I kept asking myself how closed up my cousin must have been from everyone that he thought suicide was his only option.
I have bad days, as does everyone else, and sometimes even bad weeks..
But I don't think anything is bad enough to make you end your own life..
There are many ways to fix your problems and if you can't fix them, at least try and make them better.

Fair warning

I've been having nightmares about this week ever since Dracula ended. This week's going to test everyone mentally and prove if you can handle the stress.

It's Tech Week and, oh Lord, am I dreading it! But not only is this Tech Week, this is also the week of a Government test that Mr. Stehr himself said was terribly hard. Freshman orientation is this week at EMCC, and the last week to get registered. So tomorrow at around 5 am, I'm waking up, going to EMCC to take two placement tests, get registered, come back here, go to school all day, then stay in the theater until 9 p.m.. Then on Friday, after the first show and strike, I have to go work a shift at the bar. Egads Batman! This is going to be exciting.

But, on the plus side, all my friends also help with the play, so I get a week with them. I'm writing this mainly to let all of you non-theater folks know that the people who are involved might be a bit testy. Oh, and if you have Modz, for the love of all things holy, be a good kid this week. You don't want him to unleash his theatrical anger upon you; let me tell you it's not pleasant. Well, best of luck. Cheers.

Racism is a touchy issue

People always seem to tip-toe around the subject of race, and with good reason. Racism has been the root of many historical problems. Generally, the term has come to describe white peoples' discrimination against people of color. White people are always the racists, the haters, the ones to blame. Although this may have some historical validity, this definition of racism has become obsolete in today's world. Racism is not only for Caucasians. Why is it that African-Americans and Hispanics can say almost anything discriminatory against white people and everybody looks the other way, but white people are immediately attacked if they are even suspected of hinting at racism? Of course, I definitely do not mean to say that people of color talk down about whites, but it happens, just as there are white racists.

Today, I read this article in Yahoo! News. It brings up a valid point on this subject: white players in basketball are often regarded as highly inferior to black players. People say that basketball is a black sport, and African-Americans are far more athletic than whites. So that's the argument they're using to defend their stereotypes? That's just as ridiculous as saying that the majority of our government is composed of white men because they're smarter and more respected than black politicians.

I believe that people of different ethnicities have grown an overly-defensive attitude toward suspected racism because of the abuse their race has sustained over the years. That time, however, has past. Colored people are fully accepted in our society, and all (or most) people are sensitive to racism. So why do some people still feel the need to attack whites? We cannot be responsible for the actions of our ancestors. To me, it seems that people of different races feel they have a free card to be discriminatory towards white people because most of us are too wary of the "racism" issue to confront them about it.

Yes, it annoys me when other schools laugh at our basketball team because all the players are white, or when a white kid wants to join the soccer team and is looked upon as an inferior player, or when I hear people refer to me or my friends as "crackers" and we have no room to retaliate. I think the whole race issue is blown way out of proportions, and we all need to forget about it and move on with our lives. Everybody loses with racism.

Spring holiday

We get Friday off; awesome! I'm glad for this break (everyone needs it), but there is a catch. This is the last break we are getting before summer vacation. Which bites.

I would have liked to have this a little farther from spring break, but it can't be done. The "spring holiday" that we are getting off Friday for is to be referred to as such, though it really is for Good Friday, a religious holiday. So we can't change the break day. Which is terrible.

But right now, I'm not complaining.

Can't Wait...

I'm thinking that in about 65
days, we're officially out on
SUMMER VACATION! Yay :)
I'm not sure what I'm going to be
doing that whole time, but i know
for a fact that I'm going to have
to get a job...
Ugh. Just kidding!
I'm actually looking forward to
working because that would only
be my second time being employed,
and that's always sort of: Interesting.
I was looking forward to the parties,
and all of the other things
that come with the summer...
Oh well.
I know I'm older now and
that this is the way it's going to be
from now on.
We can't magically go back
in time to when we were younger;
Back to all of our water balloon fights and
having sleepovers that only lasted till 11 p.m.
We have to take responsibility and
change our routines a little..
I'm okay with it though because
I know that it's required in everyone's lives.

Down to business

First off, I hope you all had a very nice, restful, super-awesome break. Now that it's over, we need to get to work on the newspaper. Of course, I hope you all put aside some time to work on your articles this past week. But if you didn't, and you still have articles that need to be completed, you better kick it into high gear. Thanks to those of you who have finished and turned in your stories; it is greatly appreciated. If you have questions about any of your articles, feel free to ask Shayna or Hannah. We need to get this paper on the press, and we can only do that if everyone gets down to business. I've already written two of my three assigned stories. How far along are you guys?

Spring Break!

On Thursday night right after the Flogging Molly concert Paige and I are off to San Francisco! It's going to be a long drive but completely worth it. I'm getting my liscence switched today so Paige can drive with me in the car (because I'm over 18 now, finally!). It's going to be pretty amazing. We're going to look at colleges and just wander the city. Paige's aunt said we could stay with her so we don't even have to pay for a hotel room. I hope your guys' Spring Break is equally or even more amazing! Have fun :)

Hi, staff. I will not be in today. Do what you do best. Please see Lucy, Shayna or Emily if you are not sure what is still needed for our next issue.

On Thursday, Patty Talahongva will be here as a special guest speaker. Get your questions and cameras ready.

Aint no rest for the wicked

So I have Transient Insomnia and for a while there I had no issue sleeping, but lately I cannot close my eyes. I hate it. Having insomnia is like being stuck between reality and a dream. You're conscious but you can't decipher if that really happened or if it was a dream. The longest period of time I have ever gone without sleep, lasting more than an hour at a time, was sixteen days. My eyes blur and I can't find the right words. If it gets really bad, I can start having auditory and slight visual hallucinations. But as of right now it isn't that bad, not even close. I don't know why I can't sleep, and it's just infuriating.

It's like night after night I just lay there and stare at my wall waiting to drift off but my mind won't turn off. "I have so much to do. This is a waste of time. Get up. I have no time for this nonsense. Wake up!" I just keep reminding myself of all the things that I have to do. Get a car, find a job, help out my ma, pay to get the gas turned back on. Jesus...

I've tried everything. Create a bedtime routine, make your room totally dark, make it completely quiet, and I refuse to take addicting sleeping pills, nothing ever works. So all I can do is wait for this to pass, like it always does, and until then just deal. Drink a lot of caffeine and try to wear myself out eventually. From one exhausted human to another. Goodnight.

"There ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
I've got bills to pay, I've got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free,
Oh no I can't slow down, I can't hold back,
Though you know I wish I could,
No, there ain't rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good."

Drama!!!

We have all had our fair share of it, but gosh, is it draining! I think that avoiding drama is the hardest thing for a girl to do.... That's why I think it would be a good idea for someone way more mature than I to write something on avoiding drama. It would be cool, I think.

What's next?

Well, it looks like we still have quite a bit of work to do on our newspaper. Here's some ideas that we really need people to step up on and "get the story."

  1. Sports: Thursday we have a huge track meet. We need pictures and interviews.
    1. Golf: varsity plays at home on Thursday. I'll take pictures.
    2. Softball: 24 teams will be here Friday and Saturday. We need pictures and stories.
    3. Baseball: next week
  2. Spirit week: yes, I know, again!!
    1. There must be about 100 pictures in the folder from the assembly on Wednesday.
  3. Scavenger Hunt: good job, girls. There are lots of photos in the January folder. Let's put them to good use with a theme. I thought the front page idea was good.
  4. Samantha Newton: she's our 18-year-old senior with leukemia. I spoke to her and her mother yesterday. They are very willing to tell Samantha's story. I think this would be a marvelous human interest story. Both Samantha and her mom, Dara Newton, would prefer that whoever does the story email them with the questions. Then call her later if you have questions. Her email is daranewt@msn.com. This is a very delicate story. Samantha was in the hospital (on her back) for three months. She plans on attending the prom with her boyfriend Noe Vargas, and she hopes to walk with her class for graduation. The family has been through so much, and they still have a long way to go. Her mother said that Samantha will need treatments (radiation and chemo) for the next two years. If someone would like to do this (it takes courage), I have more information for you. Thanks.
  5. April Fool's Day: we must print some totally fabricated stories for this day. Believe me, no matter how outrageous it is, some kids will believe it.
    1. indoor windsurfing champ
    2. student drafted by the NFL
    3. i-pods to replace many teachers
    4. rabid javelina attack student's car
    5. McDowell and Booth get in fist fight over where to eat lunch
    6. you get the idea.
  6. We need band pictures
    1. Mrs. Cleveland said first period is best for pictures.
  7. Other suggestions are welcomed.
  8. Writer's club Friday morning. Donuts!!
Thank you,

Photo Composition Lesson

Extension

It seems that because of the change in our "staff" here in Journalism, the newspaper has been pushed back again to sometime in March. So many people who had already been assigned articles dropped out of the class and now we have to make up for it.

Since Hannah got switched to a different hour, the coordination between us is more difficult. Thankfully we have an idea for the front page now.

This is no excuse to not turn in articles or look for good photo opportunities. It should actually make you do more work. Instead of just browsing the web during class, volunteer for another article, or think up of some new ideas. With so many people gone, the workload for everyone should be larger.

second thoughts?

Graduation. The event ALMOST everyone in high school thinks about (or should be thinking about).  As a junior graduating this year, there are a lot of things to worry about. I'm scared that something might happen and I won't pass a class and, as a result, not get all my credits.

I also think about how I'm going to pay for all my graduation stuff and, most importantly, money for college! I don't want to think about it because it makes me wonder if my decision to graduate early was a good idea.

My mom definitely doesn't want me to leave her... I also feel bad leaving my friends behind. At times, it's stressful; but I know that if I can manage to graduate, the feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment will be truly rewarding.

Only about three months now... and I'm out of here :)

Friday

Today is my great-grandfather's brithday. He has been dead for about five months now. I still miss him. I think about him a lot, especially today. I just wish that I had more time to spend with him before he died. He passed away in the hospital and my grandma was the only one in the room with him when he died.

Inked

My latest point of interest: Tattoos! Okay, so maybe I shouldn't have watched that extra episode of "LA Ink", but you have to admit that it is an intriguing topic. What is it that lures people to get a tattoo? The art... the personality... the uniqueness... maybe even the absolute certainty of having something forever etched into your skin and memory.

How many people at WHS have tattoos? What are the deep stories behind them? This could make a great article, not to mention an amazingly creative opportunity for photos. Would you ever consider getting a tattoo? I might.

The dance

I think its a good idea that our school is trying to help raise money for a class mate of ours who has been stricken with cancer. ( although no one knows who she is? I have been asking everyone if they knew her...) Anyway, I think it shows how we can band together.... I, unfortunately, will not be able to attend. Is anyone else going?

Today!

Today my older sister and cousin left for California this morning. They will be gone for five days. My sisters is going to sea world, whale watching with her class. They will be back on monday I can't wait for them to come back. I don't really like it when Kristen leaves. We hang out a lot and it's going to be weird not having her around for the next five days. I already miss them.

Newspaper-oh-newspaper

The newspaper is coming along slowly but surely. The main problem is that we don't have any pictures to go with the stories. Some pictures we could use are as follows:

  • Jimmy Campbell's band "Eyes Sewn Shut"
  • something to do with the ACT/SAT/AIMS testing
  • a picture for the book "The Loner" by Geralyn Dawson
  • WHS's band
  • something to do with the Advisory Enrichment classes
  • Math Reteach
  • Advisory Class on its own
  • Valentines' Day
  • Never Lose a Heart Dance that will be coming up this Friday
And anything else you can think of. I would really appreciate it if someone could find just one picture to go with anything listed above. It will make doing to newspaper that much easier, and it will be done that much sooner. Also remember to be working on your assigned stories and to be getting them into Lucy as soon as possible. I know that the last due date was way to soon, but since we pushed the printing date back you should have enough time to get them done.

If you have any other story or picture ideas feel free to go forth and conquer them!

Comment on Comments

I just realized now, as I desperately try to get all of my things done for this blog for the week, that the comments that are left are really rather shallow. Not shallow as in "I'm stuck up, conceited, and swear I'm the most beautiful thing in the world", but "I'm just thinking of something completely meaningless to write here so I can get my two comments".

I'm as guilty as anybody with my responses of "good job" or "I never really thought about that". While I say this now, I can almost guarantee within the next two weeks, I'll have put something exactly like that up on this site. Hypocrite should be my new middle name.

Nah, it doesn't have a nice ring to it.

After I posted my monstrous comment on Janaye's post on music, I thought about just how much this site should be helping us think. The posts should light a fire in our hearts and put a renewed spark of determination in our eyes as writers and as people. We should be passionate about the things that are posted on here.

So many "should"s, yet almost nobody does. Probably nobody will.

Make the pessimist in me eat her words, people.

My Wild Love

I've noticed the lack of musical taste of my generation and I'm appalled. Don't take this personally, it's not just the people at this school. It's our entire nation! Every person seems to have forgotten about the true greats like the Doors and Led Zeppelin and replaced them with Rihanna and 3Oh!3. Don't get me wrong I like the newer bands just as much as the next person and sing along whenever the "hits" come on the radio, but this music is meaningless. People like Ke$sha do not belong in Rolling Stone magazine. Lil Wayne should not out sell the Beatles. What has happened to our society as a whole? Is there no good music left in the world?
I took a Rock Music & Culture class at EMCC the summer of my Sophomore year. One day in class my Professor, Jean, said every decade has a great musical movement. One band of person who changes the whole scene, who moves society as whole in a different direction. These pioneers of rock, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Jerry Garcia, Eric fricken Clapton! Do you know who any of them are? Are you above the brainwashed masses who keep their stations on 96.9 and 98.3? Discover something different. Get out of the group of people bobbing their heads to meaningless junk and put on some over sized headphones, light a candle, turn your speakers up to 11 and let the music blow your mind!

One.

I've been in this class for a while now and so far I have not posted anything.
I don't know if I'm weirded out by the fact that everyone can see what I write,
or if I'm just procrastinating because I've never done this in my life and
i don't know exactly what I should be blogging about.

Anyway, it's been an interesting morning; I just heard of the fight that went on between classes.
I remember when I was in that situation. hmm.. not the greatest idea you can have.
I'm not saying this to give anyone an uncalled-for "life lesson", because trust me,
I'm the last person who should be doing that. But if i could go back, I would have thought twice about fighting, especially in school.

Those two minutes of letting out your anger will only get you two weeks of suspension
and tons of assignments, tests, and other work to make up for your classes. So really, it's not such a good idea. =]

Three Wranglers place at State

On February 12-13, the Wickenburg wrestling team competed in the 3A State tournament at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Five of the seven team members qualified for State, and those five all made it to the second day. Sophomore Dakota Downing (130-lb) and senior Dalton Hayes (189-lb) were eliminated on the 13th, while sophomore Austin Uecker (119-lb), junior Bobby Campbell (171-lb), and senior Tyler Wickham (160-lb) advanced to the finals. Wickham, who wrestled for 5th or 6th place, lost his match and came in 6th. Campbell was in the championship round, but was defeated by JP Adams of Santan Foothills and placed 2nd. Uecker wrestled a match for 3rd or 4th, which proved victorious and placed him at 3rd in the state, beneath David Shatto from Parker (2nd) and Ryak Finch from Safford (1st).

Finch is currently ranked #1 in the entire nation for the 119 weight class. The last match he lost was in his freshman year against a state champion. Now a senior, he has gone undefeated for the past three years, and no one has even scored a single point on him during a match for the past two years. He will be wrestling for Iowa State University next year, and is a hopeful for the Olympics. In fact, he was wearing socks and shorts with the Olympic logo and writing that said "Future Olympian," which he received from the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs last summer. His current record (wins-losses) is 202-2. He was recently featured on the cover of ESPN RISE magazine. Read the article here.

Considering the outstanding position of the first place 119-lb wrestler, Uecker's 3rd-place medal is that much more impressive. Equally impressive is Campbell's 2nd-place medal, since this is his first year ever wrestling. The coaches are hoping for him to take 1st next year and possibly go on to Nationals.

Wickenburg placed 15th overall for team points, with 54.50. See the full list here. To see the entire tournament brackets for every weight class, click here. Watch video coverage of the championship matches here!

Track and Field

Track started February 8, along with a couple other of the Spring sports. I don't know about the turn out for try outs in the others, but Track seems to be very popular.

Over 10 Freshman showed up on Monday, but we expected that. Lots of them show up, but usually a good amount drop out after the first week of practice. Last year, there were 9 newbies to the school.

What is surprising is the amount of rookies that showed up from other grades. They helped us keep our large numbers.

Unfortunately, all of our Seniors are gone. Those guys and girls made up a good portion of those who went to State and those who were on the relay teams. There are only a few Juniors from last year here.

We still have a lot of people though. There will be some problems again with uniforms. The old ones from years and years ago will have to go to the Freshmeat. Oh well, I'm a Sophomore, so I don't care.

The fabulous February

The month of February has just barely begun and there has been a lot of talk about its being out to get them. Between cramming for major tests this past week and having honors projects and book reports being assigned, people just aren't in a great mood. Many think that Valentines' Day might have something to do with it. Like it's a bad omen or something. I can agree; this month hasn't started out with the best of bangs, but hopefully it will get better by next week.

How has everyone else's February been? Fabulous or disastrous?

March 17!

On March 17th, my favorite band is coming to Tempe! Flogging Molly, Metrick, The Bollox, and the Keltic Cowboys are putting on a St. Paddy's Day concert.

My mom took me to see Flogging Molly for the first time when I was 12 and it was the best concert I have ever seen. They put on an amazing show.

Last year for Irish Fest in St. Paul Minnesota they put on a free concert with the Dropkick Murphys (my other favorite band) and it was legendary. I cannot wait to see them again on the 17th.

Don't expect to see me at school that day. Actually.. it's St. Paddy's Day; don't expect to see me the day after either.

State for wrestling

On Friday, February 12, five Wickenburg wrestlers will travel to Prescott Valley for the 3A State tournament. Those who will be competing are sophomore Austin Uecker, (who placed 2nd in regionals for 119), sophomore Dakota Downing (4th place in regionals for 130), senior Tyler Wickham (1st place in regionals for 160), junior Bobby Campbell (1st place in regionals for 171), and senior Dalton Hayes (3rd place in regionals for 189). They will wrestle other 3A schools from all over Arizona.

To advance to the second day of State (Saturday, February 13), each wrestler must win two matches on the first day. If a wrestler wins his first two matches on the second day, he will be able to wrestler for 1st-6th place.

Student Council

I finally got an interview with Phoebe Blakeley regarding the Student Council article. Sort of. I gave her a paper with a bunch of questions on it and she filled it out very well.

It really is a good idea for almost any interview. The interviewee gets time to fill out the form in detail without the awkward pauses for thinking that needs to be done in a live conversation. Or for shy people who just can't stand walking up to a stranger. And if the person isn't around often, you don't have to track them down with bloodhounds.

I almost resorted to that. I asked for the interview for the last addition and waited two separate times for her without her showing up. But enough of my ranting.

The only problem with this method of interviewing is if you have more questions that you think up during the interview, you have no way of asking until you send out another letter.

Oh well. I have the information I need for my article.

Wild Horses

Have you ever remembered something you completely forgot about? Usually these hidden memories are brought back to life by sights or smells, but with me sounds bring back things more than anything else. Today I was listening to my mp3 player and I turned on the Rolling Stones. When "Wild Horses" came on and it hit me so hard. Not any memory in particular, just my dad in general. Riding in his truck with the windows down, picking flowers in the La Plata mountains, throwing snowballs... just all those things I won't be able to do soon. It's incredible how a number can end and begin your life at the same time. Eighteen... It was the age I always wanted to be. When I was young I would dream of the day I could tell my parents to kiss off and just do whatever I want to do. But now that's it's almost here, I regret not being a child. Because of the things I had to face at a young age, I had to grow up fast. The only childhood memories I have are with my dad in Colorado. When that song came on, the familiarity was almost frightening. I could see my dad smoking with one hand on the wheel smiling at me while I sang along with Mick Jagger. I could almost smell his cologne and the flowers blooming on the mountains. I could feel the wind in my hair, and for the first time, I truly missed being a child. I'm missed all my chances for the simple freedoms that come with being young. I realize I have a lot of life left, but none of it will be as happy as those seven years with my dad. I miss you J.T., I'll see you when I see you. Love, Boo.

"Childhood living is easy to do,

The things you wanted, I bought them for you,

Graceless lady, You know who I am,

You know I can't let you , Slide through my hands,

Wild horses couldn't drag me away

Wild wild horses, couldn't drag me away"

You don't know what you have till you (almost) lose it

Since Mr. Burd has been gone, I've realized how much we depend on him. It reminded me of a poem I once read by Charles Hanson Towne, called "Around the Corner." It teaches you to appreciate your friends while they're still here. Thanks for coming back, Mr. Burd.

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friend's face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow!" I say. "I will call on Jim,
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir,"…. "Jim died today."

And that's what we get, and deserve in the end:
Around the corner, a vanished friend.

Absolutely nothing

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and I really just don't know what to write about, similar to how other students in this class are feeling. So, instead, I've been thinking. About the future, about college, jobs, homework. Nothing really all that exciting. Homework seems to be bogging me down lately. I'm up late at night trying to perfect every little thing. I'm a perfectionist if you didn't know that already. Everything must be in the right place, at the right time, in the right order. I think I get it from my dad. So I haven't been up to anything lately or writing about anything. I'm just kind of empty at the moment. Hopefully something will catch my interest soon because it's getting just plain boring around here.

Advisory must go

My thoughts have been on the future lately. I have been contemplating what my career will be, which college I should go to, and something of equal importance but in the much nearer future-- which classes I will take in the next two years. This would not be such a difficult choice if our ineptly-named "advisory" class did not get in the way.

Of course, I will have to take the required English and social studies courses. As far as math goes, I know that I will take pre-calculus, followed by calculus in my senior year. I will take physics as a junior, but I'm undecided on my science credit the year after that. A lab science would be preferable, though. So this takes care of my core classes for the most part. No problem there.

But what about electives? I am planning on taking anatomy, psychology/sociology, Spanish III and possibly Spanish IV. I do need to fit an art credit in there somewhere, too. In an ideal situation, I would also take Journalism. However, the situation is far from that. With the introduction of advisory, our yearly elective hours are cut down to two instead of three. If I am required to obtain a certain amount of credits of a specific type, such as art credits and foreign languages, how will I take the classes that I want? The classes I want to take are subjects that will most benefit my career and my chances of getting into a good college. A great big thanks goes out to whoever thought of the horrible idea for advisory.

Not only are our elective hours restricted, we also are gaining less credits per year. Advisory only counts as half a credit. Where is the sense in this? Shouldn't our school be trying to help us make the best of ourselves through their curriculum?

Some would argue that advisory is doing just that. The goal of our half-hour class is to prepare us for college and life in the real world by improving study habits, morals, and social skills. However, most of the "morals exercises" and "career etiquette" activities they make us do were already given to us last year in Career and Technology Foundations. The studying, reading, etc. skills they are trying to teach us have already been introduced to us. The so-called curriculum is useless. And when there is no lesson planned for the day, students use it as a study hall. The only good thing to have come out of this disastrous idea is the enrichment classes, which everybody seems to love. Other than these once-a-week enjoyments, advisory is a complete waste of time. Time which could be spent on far more important subjects.

Why? Why would our administration allow everybody to have free time almost every day when it would be so much more beneficial to give us our other elective back? It does not even have to go that far. If our faculty is reluctant to change our schedule back to how it was last year, then I suggest a compromise-- allow us to have our enrichment class Monday through Friday instead of advisory. A whole week would greatly benefit all of the programs, giving the classes and students more time to grow and develop. Think of how much help it would be to math reteach.

I'll admit that whoever came up with the idea for enrichment really had their head on right. With so many intriguing and fun options that appeal to all genres and interests, these weekly sessions give students something to look forward to. Classes like college prep are excellent for students focused on making it into good colleges. The survival skills and lifetime running programs help students build up practical and healthy habits. Other classes provide a time to enjoy a hobby or sport, relieve stress, develop a personal talent or skills you may need in your career, test your mechanical or strategic knowledge, and pursue new interests. My hope is that with a little more development, some of the enrichment classes will become real hour-long classes for a full credit. I for one would definitely take Sports Medicine if it was offered as an elective.

Even if some of this cannot be accomplished, one certain fact remains: Advisory must go.

Do you agree? Disagree? Leave a comment and let me know where you stand on the issue. If enough of us believe strongly in this, we can make them change it.

Front page

On the front page of the newspaper this week, it said that the prison project is still up in the air. I think that it is ridiculous. Wickenburg is already known for major addiction rehabilitation centers, we don't need a prison on the list.

Even though Forepaugh is out in Aguila, we don't need something like that here so close to home. The jobs would be nice, but are they worth it? A lot of the new employees would be from out of town anyway.

And think about all the people in Forepaugh. Think about their families, children, and animals. They moved out there to be in the tranquil, open, Arizona air, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A prison in view of their front porch is exactly what they don't need.

If the state wants a prison, go put it out in some other section of the boonies. This one is inhabited.

If you're going to San Francisco

Mr. Burd made a really good point. I know quite a bit about San Francisco and, since it's all that's on my mind lately, I'm writing a blog about it. In exactly 140 days I'm moving away. My best friend, Paige Fekete, and I are packing up what little belongings we have and finally starting our lives. The last few months we've been looking at living expenses and I know we can make it. Mainly because we don't want a better living condition than the one we have, we just want to maintain our standard living plus rent. I've also been looking at apartments and there are a lot of good options. We can manage living in a nicer place because there's two of us and my dad agreed to help with rent for the first four years, as long as I'm in college.
Even though we can afford a nice place, chances are we'll be living in either the Mission (Not the safest neighborhood but defiantly not the worst. Has more of a college feel to it, it's almost bohemian.), Tendernob (Which is south of Nob Hill, a very rich neighborhood, and north of Tenderloin, a more industrial section of the city.), or North Panhandle (Another not to great neighborhood.) San Francisco is a unique city that cannot be understood unless you've been there. It's almost magic. The city itself can taunt, frighten, and seduce you. Every region, from Haight- Ashbury to the Fisherman's Wharf, is totally different from one another.

From the time we were ten Paige and I have been talking about San Fran. We always spoke of it as if it were a dream, like flying or walking on the moon. It wasn't until the beginning of last year that we realised, this could happen. We could do this and we could do it right. We can live the way we've wanted to for so long. And although we may not be able to afford that Victorian duplex on Haight street just yet, we will someday. Although my name isn't listed as a staff writer in the San Francisco Chronicle now, it will be someday. Although I don't have the ocean air through my hair today, I will someday. I'll get there, I can feel it.
Some people are born to do certain things. Whether it's save lives, live in a different country, or rob banks. Those actions obsess these people. It's all they think and talk about. They eat, sleep, breathe this one thing. I didn't know what my one thing was. All I knew was that I was obsessed with getting away. I never wanted to be in one place, until I saw San Fran. I could honestly live my whole life in that area and die completely happy. Writing in San Francisco is my one thing. My obsession, my dream, and soon my reality. I hope you all find yours.

Zero

I honestly have nothing to blog about. This part of the class just stumps me. I'm not a very open person. I mean if you ask me a question I'll answer it honestly, but this whole rant and rave on the Internet thing just isn't my style. I don't like to vent. The way I see it, the problems I have are there so I can figure out how to overcome them on my own. Some of my "issues" involve family and what happens in my family is no one's business but ours. So, what does that leave me to talk about? Music? My friends? San Francisco? (Four months before I'm out of here!) I have nothing interesting to fill this screen with. I have no inspiring words of wisdom to bring to my fellow classmates. I'm sort of a blank canvas at this moment in time.

Last year

I know this is going to sound like me crying and moaning, but last year as a freshman I was told "Seniority, Seniority, Seniority!" We basically had it pounded into our heads that, in theater, the upperclassmen always got the bigger roles. This year two freshmen got both the lead and 2nd lead roles for Annie Jr...... I suppose I should just stop whining but I am just rather upset.

Our admin rocks!

I've been heavily involved in following the trials and tribulations of journalism advisers across our nation. You would be astounded to read about the various brouhahas that take place between some of the staff and advisers, or advisers and administration, or staff and administration.

I posted a link here for you to take a look at one example that recently gained national attention. As I follow a few of these stories, I have to think how lucky we are at WHS to have such a supportive administration. In case you guys did not know this, over the past two years as an adviser, I have received only positive feedback or positive redirection from our admin--never negative criticism, never blanket censorship.

Weather causes complications (obviously)

The wrestling meet at Mohave, scheduled for Friday and Saturday of this week, has been cancelled due to weather conditions. As this was supposed to be a very big meet, and one the team would have to spend the night at, this news comes as a huge disappointment.

Mohave is about three hours northwest of Wickenburg. The drive there would travel through mountainous areas, which would be a problem for the vans given the current state of affairs.

The next meet will be the Wickenburg Invitational. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 27!

I would also like to remind everybody to keep working on your stories. I know it's a little complicated without Mr. Burd here, but the paper must be printed. Without everybody's input, it will not be possible. If you are finished with your assigned articles, brainstorm some more ideas. Run these by Hannah and Shayna, and then get working on them. We don't have a lot of content right now, so every little bit helps. The deadline will come up on you faster than you can imagine.

I refuse

So there is probably going to be a million-and-one posts on this thing about the weather and how it's raining and what not. But me, I refuse to talk about the weather and be an individual because let's be honest people, how many times do you want to read the words "it's raining"? Continuing on with more important news, if you haven't heard already, the third issue of The Wrangler Gazette has been pushed back to the the week before Valentines Day. I know that we made a huge deal about getting your articles done in a matter of a two weeks, and I'm sorry for that. Things just change, and Hanna and myself realized that it just wasn't possible to get four issues done this semester, so we are cutting it to either two or three. Mr. Byrd wants it to be three, but we kind of think otherwise. There just really isn't that much to write about. Which brings up another point of mine, if you have any ideas for articles, please write them down because we really need more articles. Also, we have absolutely no pictures, so if you feel like taking a picture of something that interests you, do it, and then maybe you can work an article out of the picture.

It's raining, it's pouring

...The old man is snoring. I wish I was the one snoring right now though. Whole districts up north are getting snow days; some are getting snow weeks!

There were a whole bunch of rumors that school would be let out early for everyone, or just some people who lived in hard to reach places because of the flooding. Just now, Mrs. Jacobson put those rumors to rest. But Whispering Ranch students couldn't even get to school because of this amazing rain, and it is only supposed to get heavier.

Hopefully, by some miracle of whatever deity you believe in or just a random act of nature, we get rain like this more often. It is refreshing, exciting, and instills the love of the outdoors again to us crusty, dusty Arizonans.

A curious question of birthdays

Does it seem like there are a lot of birthdays today and over the past few days? I know for a fact that my brother's, Dylan's, is today, as well as someone by the name of Caleb, according to the signs coming down the school driveway. Among the teachers, Ms. Drexel and Mr. Elinski are celebrating their birthdays. Tanner Walker's was two days ago, on January 17, and Dylan claims that somebody else in his grade also has their birthday today. I find it strange that so many birthdays are over the same few days. Maybe I'm just reading into it too much, but it's still surprising.

What do you think of all this celebration?

Long winter stretches on

Hello, staff.

I hope you all know how much I appreciate you. I really wish I could have been there with you these past two weeks. However, my recovery from cancer surgery has not gone as well as I hoped. I will not be in this week, either.

I've often thought that it would be delightful to have a lot of time off to just relax and dabble around on projects that are of interest to me. But, as I am sure you are all aware, pain and discomfort remove any desire to do anything. I've had very little interest in projects of any kind.

I have been at home (with a few exceptions) continuously for the past four weeks. My sole desire has been to get well again. Patience has never been my greatest virtue. So, I take my walks, and my naps, and my meds. And I wait. And I hope. And I pray.

"I have measured out my life with coffee spoons." T.S.Eliot (my favorite poet)

So please carry on. Take pictures, do interviews, write stories, blog, submit articles for the online paper, ask for stories, poems, puzzles, comics. Work as a team. Do your best. I am so proud of all of you.

I hope to see you next week.

Journalistically yours,

SMILE!

Brighten up someone's day! If you see a complete stranger with a sad face, go and tell them the funniest joke you can think of. :) One day in the future, when you're not even thinking about it, someone will come and do the same for you. Even if they are complete strangers. So try and make someone's day, who just looks like they need a helping hand.

No school!

The weekend is upon us, and many people are surprised to find that there is no school on Monday. This is not a rumor. It is true. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

So make sure not to come to school on Monday unless you really just have nothing better to do.

Have a great extended weekend!

Yupps, Modz's 7th hour Applied Theater class has been working very hard on a dinner theater, and its tonight! Tickets are $30, it would be great if anyone could come! There are two very funny shows that are actually pretty short. I am sure every one would enjoy it!

Schedule

I really like how today's schedule went. Lunch was based on advisory, which meant it was based on grade. I got to hang out with friends that I don't have classes with at lunch and never see outside of school.

It was pretty awesome. We had a ton of fun, reminiscing about the days when we all had the same lunch. Seeing people in the morning isn't the same as having laughs at lunch; we're not even alive that early.

If we do end up keeping this ridiculous advisory deal, I think it would be a good idea to base lunch on that instead of whatever they do now. That, and the clubs, are the only good things that have come out of this whole mess.

Friday!

This Friday at six o'clock in the cafe, the theatre department is holding a Dinner Theatre. It's thirty dollars for a four course gourmet meal and two plays. Both plays are comedies and, if I do say so myself, hilarious! Our class has been working on them for weeks and they are being fine tuned this week. I'm directing one of them called "Twitch". It's about strange neighbors moving in next door and things not being quite what they seem. The second show is The Keystone Knights, directed by Sarilda Grantham. It's about three bumbling knights and an easily annoyed dragon. So please tell your friends and family to come support the theatre department by coming to our Dinner Theatre!

Surviving the first week back

Well the week is officially over and we all survived as far as I know. I personally think that this past week was rather easy, but waking up early wasn't all that exciting.

Next week be prepared for the teachers to start slamming down huge work loads again. After all, fun wasn't intended to last forever. Also, note that next week in Algebra II on Thursday in Ms. Webb's class there is a unit test. So study up.

Enjoy your weekend people.

Robert F Kennedy Award for high school journalism

I absolutely believe that there are several students in our class who could win one of these highly prestigious awards. What an honor it would be for any student to be selected by this marvelous organization and to receive national recognition for your journalism efforts.

Check it out at this site. You must scroll down to the high school category for an application. Deadline for submission is January 28.

Also, please keep the articles and photos coming to both the blog and our on-line newspaper. If you're unfamiliar with either of these two sites, please ask one of your colleagues.

Enrichment time change

I heard from a couple of teachers that the Advisory Enrichment was going to be extended to an hour by taking five minutes off of all the other classes. I think that sounds pretty cool. I mean, by the time roll gets taken and everything, the class is half over.

And then there is the Cross Country, Dance, and Yoga classes too. Once they get changed into their work-out clothes and do their warm-ups, they only have a few minutes to do their main activities before getting changed again. An hour is a much better idea.

Mark your calendars! The only home wrestling meet of the season is on Wednesday, January 27 at 2:00 pm. Come and support your Wranglers!

Who's teaching whom?

I just finished watching a fascinating movie. It's a movie I never would have watched if I weren't a teacher. I watched it because one of my students in the journalism class listed it as her favorite movie of all time.

This type of educational experience happens to me quite often. I'll find a student talking about a book he read or a CD she listened to or a web-site he visited. Whenever I follow up on the tip, I always find myself experiencing something marvelous. I learn. I learn something new, interesting and unique.

Teachers often consider themselves the dispensers of knowledge and students as the empty vessels to be filled. That is a monumental error. High school, or any school for that matter, is a learning community. We are teaching each other. We are all collaborators in the educational process. I learn from you; I hope you learn from me.

And so, I highly recommend the movie 8 Seconds.

Sport Over looked

OK, so most of us hate the cheerleaders. Which is fine and also something to be expected, but did you know how hard those girls work out? It's nothing compared to say track or softball, but the amount of physical activity and also the amount of time they put into staying in shape almost, well , shocked me. I don't know if the cheerleaders deserve respect, but they do deserve some credit for what they do.

My New Year's Resolution.

In case some of you don't know, I take part in the nastiest of habits... a very common yet lethal habit. Yes, I am a smoker. No, it wasn't peer pressure that dragged me into it, nor was it an act for attention.

My whole family smokes, and research shows if both parents smoke, you're most likely going to  smoke, also.  (I'm not blaming them; it's just statistical probablilities).

Smoking is a disgusting habit; I wish I never got into it. I can tell it has made a negative impact on my health. I can't run very long without struggling to breathe; I can't laugh too hard because I will go into a coughing spasm; and I can't go to sleep until I have a cigarette before bed.

I want to share with you HOW BAD smoking and it's addictions are. So when my parents didn't know I smoked, I would go around my yard looking for half smoked butts to finish off. I would go at this for hours until my craving was satisfied. I would go completely mad if I didnt have a cigarrette; in fact, I still do.

I am not proud of smoking. When I'm in public, I'm embarassed to light up, but my craving for nicotine pushes past my embarassment. I go through a bottle of perfume per month to try to cover up the smell and sometimes it doesn't work. I hear people say "OMG, someone smells like an ashtray!"

Guys, this stuff hurts. Addiction doesnt care who you are, how old you are, or how important you are... Addiction will pull any one in at anytime. It doesnt care if you want to or not; it doesnt consider your feelings. ADDICTION WILL CATCH ANYONE! So for my new year's resolution, I am going to try my hardest to quit smoking!

Resolutions

Things have changed as 2010 has approached. Many Americans make a new years resolution to start off the year right. So what are your resolutions? All the classes have had all the kids answer all the same questions, what did you do for break and what are your new years resolutions? But many of the teenagers don't conduct these kinds of goals. In many ways resolutions could be a great way to start off the year, and everyone should make one of them.... BUT not everyone does. Should we all be making these? Anyways, whatever your resolution may be, I hope that all they all work out and have a great 2010!!!!

New day, new year

Greetings, staff. Welcome back.

It is a delight to have so many marvelous students in one class! I hope you had an incredibly splendid Christmas break.

There is much to learn, and there is much to do. Hannah, Lucy and Shayna are going to need your stories ASAP. Your guest teacher, Ms. DiSciascio, is quite familiar with journalism. She should be able to give you some wonderful insights.

Take advantage of the writer's club for their photos, poems and stories.

InDesign CS4 has some very helpful instructional videos. I put a link on our links column (left).

Work together as a team, and stay focused on the goal: a WHS newspaper that you can be proud of.

See you in a few weeks. If you need me, I'm at rburd49@gmail.com.

Thanks so much,

R.Burd
