I just realized now, as I desperately try to get all of my things done for this blog for the week, that the comments that are left are really rather shallow. Not shallow as in "I'm stuck up, conceited, and swear I'm the most beautiful thing in the world", but "I'm just thinking of something completely meaningless to write here so I can get my two comments".
I'm as guilty as anybody with my responses of "good job" or "I never really thought about that". While I say this now, I can almost guarantee within the next two weeks, I'll have put something exactly like that up on this site. Hypocrite should be my new middle name.
Nah, it doesn't have a nice ring to it.
After I posted my monstrous comment on Janaye's post on music, I thought about just how much this site should be helping us think. The posts should light a fire in our hearts and put a renewed spark of determination in our eyes as writers and as people. We should be passionate about the things that are posted on here.
So many "should"s, yet almost nobody does. Probably nobody will.
Make the pessimist in me eat her words, people.

Lucy, if I haven't already told you, I'm telling you now: I feel so fortunate to have you as a student. You have incredible talent and a real gift for expressing yourself.
ReplyDeleteI hope you do not find this shallow, but I think you are a marvelous person. You have passion and courage. You tell the truth, as you see it, and that is rare and refreshing.
Thanks for all you do,

And I'm humble too. No, just kidding. Thanks Mr. Burd.

That's what I always try to do too. Stir up conversation. The way to get people to say things other than "That's really good! :)" Is to say things people don't like. I'm a firm believer in making people think about thing they normally wouldn't think about. Although sometimes I do just post the shallow blogs about the Thespian troop and what not when I have nothing better to say, but in all actualality what we should be doing on this blog is talking about the things no one else wants to. We're journalists. The parasite of the press. we're supposed to get under people's skin.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but there are only so many times we can write about Advisory or the dozen other reasons this school sucks. Good journalism it may be at first, but in the end, it is not.
